House Plants

Aloe
Lots of little babies have sprouted over the winter, a larger pot will be needed soon

Pregnant Onion
Sprouting some babies of her own, how fitting!!

Sunday Yard Day

Dan mulched around a couple of our front yard trees and our new big rock from the farm today. Now I am having huge urges to go buy more plants and flowers to fill in with. Maybe this planting project will wait until next spring.
Sorry for the tree shadow! This is a picture of the newly updated front rock wall. Dan added some larger stones to the wall we had started last year and I think it looks great. We will be filling in this area with a bunch of dirt and more mulch. The plan is to have a sitting area with a small table and a couple of chairs in this area along with the large cedar trellis I found and of course a bunch more plants and flowers!

The sidewalk garden is overflowing with blooms this year. I love the smell of them all as you walk towards our front door!

A new shot of the upfront garden. The plants in this garden are doing really well this year too. I only lost one from winter to spring! I mulched it in a couple of weekends ago and I am loving the way it looks.

One of the front sides of our house. Dan and I are very excited that once we finish the area around the corner that this section of the yard will be complete!

Wednesday

Snooooooooo!

We woke up this morning to snow...on April 1st! Yuck!
Tehya and I were both pretty bummed out to see what was going on outside, but Ada rushed to the living room window and yelled excitedly "snooooooooooo!!!!!"
I guess Dan isnt the only snowbird in our house!

Our Greenhouse experiment

Tehya and I have decided to try something new this year. We are starting some flower seeds in an indoor "greenhouse" container. Tehya is my garden helper, so she really enjoyed filling the cubes with dirt and deciding which section got what type of seeds. We are trying to germinate black eyed susans, coneflowers, 2 different kinds of poppies, snapdragons and a couple of others that we thought looked pretty on the seed packages!

More Garden Updates

I can't help it, my gardens growing thrill me to no end! Here are a couple of updated photos - although next spring it will be so much better once everything is in bloom! I have more 'hand me down' plants to get in the ground this weekend which I am very excited for!
Tehya is becoming more of a green thumb every time I look - that girl knows the name of almost every plant we have and LIKES pulling weeds with me! She must have inherited those genes from Grandma Sue!

New Lilac Hedge

I am overly excited that I found a shrub sale at our local garden center - all shrubs 50% off! I purchased a bunch of lilacs (all dark and light purple varieties of course) and decided to start a hedge on our property line between our one neighbor. Digging them in was HARD work as I have discovered our front yard must be made out of granite, however it was well worth it because they look great!
I can't wait for them to start filling in!

Walkway Garden Update

A recent picture of the very first garden we planted at the house -
if you scroll down through my older posts and see the one from when we started this garden you will be amazed - it has grown in beautifully!
I have to admit that although this is the smallest of our gardens so far, it is the one I am proudest of - these are the very first outdoor plantings that I
didn't kill off...and the planting that allowed me to convince Dan I needed more gardens!

Street Garden Update

The rock border is complete and the plants are in - now we just wait for them to grow and try to keep the weeds out! Eventually Dan and I are planning on putting in a row of lilacs between the garden and the sidewalk as an extra noise barrier from the street.

Plantings are numerous, but include some of the following: Iris, Coneflower, Ballon Flower, Phlox, Lily of the Valley, Hen and chicks, Hosta, Daisy, Forget me nots, Catmint, Black eyed Susan, Autumn Sedum, Daylilly

Dan earned major husband bonus points yesterday with the surprise he showed me when I came home from work. He bought a bunch of new hose and strung it along the top inside rail of our fence so that now all I have to do to water my new garden is drop the coil hose sprayer he got me over the fence and start spraying! No more having to drag hoses all over the yard - What a guy!

Front Garden Update

A couple pictures showing the growth in the front garden from last year. I added some copper solar lights that Dan got me for mothers day and a gorgeous copper bird bath that my brother got me for my birthday. Also added were 3 copper butterfly sticks from my mom - the coolest things I have seen in a long time!

Playing in the Dirt

We had 5 yards of fresh black dirt delivered for the new garden. 5 yards is A LOT of dirt!
Tehya loves helping in the yard and anything that has to do with planting more flowers so she jumped right on the chance to help!

Ada in the Grass

Ada loves being outside, and loves playing in the grass even more. There have been several occasions aleady this summer in which we have had to dig grass out of her mouth, as apparently she thinks it is pretty tasty too! Dan even had the joy of finding clippings in her messy diaper a few weeks ago...better him than mom!

Wednesday

Container Garden

Another anniversary gift from my mom -
the purple container I have been searching for to put on our front steps!

How can you go wrong with a mom like mine?

She even planted it for me!

Flower Bed Reborn

Before picture
Another before picture
After - edging block completed and all planted
After - view #2
After - view #3
A HUGE thank you to my mom who I have to admit did the large majority of the work on this bed while I was still pregnant.
She dug in all of the block and then surprised us with buying all the plants and flowers for our anniversary gift!
I can't wait until next year when they will have a chance to grow for a full season - I know it is going to be beautiful!

Tuesday

Gardening with Grandma

The very beginnings of our new walkway garden
Tehya and Grandma Sue busy planting our new botanical treasures

Tehya says she is "Grandma's Little Gardener"

Hopefully she inherits more of Grandma's green thumb than mom did!

Finished product with everything planted...Now we just wait for it to grow!

Garden contains Blackeyed Susan Daylily, Stella Daylily, Tigerlily, Larkspur Delphinium, 2 types of Sedum, and Catmint - all are supposed to attract butterflies!
